Roaring Sunflowers, 2024
Hand-cut porcelein and ceramic tiles, smalti, and crockery on compressed cement sheet with stainless-steel frame
100 cm H x 240 cm W
This community project located on the amenity block in Bill Fritz Park, Bargara, involved 40 participants and recognises the historical links of this park to the Bargara Lions Club and its leadership and committment to create a place accessible to people with a disability. Consequently, the mosaic design includes the Lions Club logo (use officially approved by the legal boffins in NY) and the modern Disability Accessible Icon, embedded in a field of sunflowers reflecting the brightness and joy of living, but also referencing the Robertson sunflower farm and flower stall on nearby Bargara Road. Several magpie geese flying across the sky complete the design.
During the consultation process for the design it was highlighted that sunflowers are increasingly recognised as a symbol of hidden disabilities – so are a perfect complement to the internationally recognised wheelchair symbol. I love how artworks have layers of meaning!
